Louisiana Iris

The Louisiana Iris is well adapted to our tropical Queensland climate. They originated in the bayous of Louisiana in southern USA, where hot, wet conditions predominate. They can be grown in ordinary garden situations or alongside dams and even in ponds. The colour range is large with just about every shade of pink, yellow, blue, white, red and purple you could imagine. Their heights range from 35cm to 180cm. Flowering season in Queensland is from early September to mid November. Plants are evergreen. Overall a superb plant for every garden.

CULTURE: Plant rhizome about 5cm below the surface into a rich, well composted soil mixture. They prefer an acid soil and sulphur may be added to this effect. Allow plenty of room as most varieties are vigorous. We suggest lifting and separating your clump every 3 years in late Autumn or early Winter. They need to be fertilised regularly. Osmacote, Garden Master or a well composted animal manure (except chicken)will suffice. We use and recommend Sheep Manure. Keep well mulched, and remember to water well. Don’t forget - they will not tolerate lime!
