Hippeastrums

In Queensland the Hippeastrum is a Spring flowering bulb. The flowers are extremely large and trumpet shaped and are borne on thick hollow stems with usually four flowers to a stem. The colours are spectacular, ranging from pure white, through all the pinks, oranges and reds. And more recently doubles have become available. A mature bulb can produce two to four flower spikes a season with each one lasting 2-3 weeks depending on climatic conditions. Hippeastrums would have to be one of the easiest bulbs to grow. It doesn’t matter what type of soil they are grown in, as long as it is well drained. They will grow and flower in full sun or semi-shade and if potted, can be brought inside to enjoy while in bloom.

CULTURE: Plant bulbs in soil, point up with the neck above the soil. The soil can be improved before planting by adding any organic matter. Fertilise using a good complete or balanced fertiliser such as, Nutricote or Garden Master. Plant approximately 45cm apart and it won’t be necessary to separate clumps for 3-4 years. Clumps are best separated after they have finished blooming, usually in late Summer early Autumn. They actually prefer to be a little crowded. Hippeastrums also make perfect pot plants. Just pick a pot large enough to hold 2 or 3 bulbs and remember to water well in the flowering season. They go dormant in the winter months so do not fertilise during this time. Do not worry if the leaves yellow and die they will grow back bigger and better. Beware: Do not over water your bulbs, they will rot if left sitting in wet boggy soil.
